Frontiers in Pharmacology publishes BHB’s study on the effect of GPP refresher training for medicine dispensers in Bangladesh

BHB offers an 80-hour refresher training course on GPP to the country’s medicine dispensers who meet certain basic criteria. FCDO provides financial support for this training; 11,577 medicine dispensers have received the refresher training, and an additional 2,500 will be trained by the end of 2023. BHB commissioned ICDDR,B to assess the effects of the dispenser training on their attitudes and GPP knowledge and practice.

GPP course curricula

  • Establishing and operating a Model Pharmacy or Model Medicine Shop
  • Bangladesh’s health system
  • Pharmacists’ codes of ethics
  • Pharmacy rules and regulations
  • Basics on the human body, microbiology, and medicine management
  • Potential side effects of medicines
  • Pharmacovigilance
  • Rational use of medicines
  • Effective communication with patients and counselling them on things like over-the-counter and prescription-only medicines, specific health conditions and needs, and others

Frontiers in Pharmacology published a research report on this study in its 12 July 2023 issue. In this case-control study, researchers enrolled 220 GPP-trained dispensers and 220 dispensers who did not receive GGP training using a semi-structured questionnaire and observation checklists. The results showed that GPP-trained participants had better knowledge of dispensing guidelines, medicine storage conditions, and medicine labelling. Their dispensing practices were also superior to the control group, particularly in areas like customer counselling and maintaining proper storage temperature. The study concluded that while its initial GPP training is beneficial, periodic retraining is essential to sustain overall pharmacy practices in the country.
