Hon’ble Health Minister initiated discussion for 5th Health Sector Programme – BHB provided facilitation support

On 6 June 2022, the Hon’ble Health Minister of Bangladesh, Zahid Maleque, MP, met with 83 representatives from other government ministries and divisions, key health institutions, diplomatic missions, development partners, development banks, and international health organizations to discuss the vision and design of the forthcoming 5th Health, Population and Nutrition Sector Programme of Bangladesh 2024-2028. The meeting highlighted the benefit of Bangladesh’s health sector programme as a sector-wide approach with a single five-year plan and resource envelop comprising government and development partner contributions and a focus on primary healthcare, maternal and child health, and health-related Sustainable Development Goals. The meeting also emphasised the programme’s achievements in improving national health care at a good value, viz., accessibility and coverage, immunization, maternal and child health, nutrition, and recent success in COVID-19 management and vaccination. The Hon’ble Minister summarized important future needs to be transformation from episodic health care to chronic conditions and complex illnesses; capacity to respond and manage emergencies; restructure of the health workforce; use of a whole-of-government approach such as coordination with other ministries; private sector engagement; and appropriate use of health technology and electronic health records. The Hon’ble Minister thanked the countries, development partners, and international nongovernmental organizations for their consistent support of the past health sector programmes and urged additional assistance in the design, development, financing, facilitation, and implementation of the 5th health sector programme. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Development Director for Bangladesh, Matt Cannel, and other team members joined the event and spoke. BHB supported the organisation of this event.
