UK Government’s team from Department of Health and Social Care visited Bangladesh to discuss AMR containment

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global concern. It is widely believed that if the irrational use of antibiotics is not controlled, most antibiotics, including the newer ones, will no longer be effective against bacteria. In addition, because antibiotics yield few or no profit for the pharmaceutical industry, they have little interest in doing research or manufacturing antibiotics. The AMR situation is so dire, the fear is that many people could die from very simple infections that were frequently easy to treat as well as post-operative infections.

Like many other countries, Bangladesh sees much indiscriminate use of antibiotics. The UK Government’s Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) works with Fleming Fund, UK as to contain AMR in multiple countries, including Bangladesh. A team from the DHSC visited Bangladesh recently, visiting the Director General of Drug Administration on 16 August 2023 and the BHB team on 17 August 2023 to discuss how interventions could be improved and implemented given the local context.
